What is the difference between PTH and TH?

In general language, in our daily life its called holes.

But when it comes to PCB. It become technical and that mean we have to be careful and understand what it is actually.

In PCB world holes are two types

  1. Plated Through holes. Also knows as PTH. :- resistor, capacitor, inductor, transformer, header, connectors etc. Need that kind of holes. In plated through holes we have copper running around the hole. Refer below picture. Yes, via holes comes in the category of PTH.
  2. Through holes:- They are simple holes. We need those kind where electrical conductivity is not required. Some components have mounting provision made of plastic. In PCB we just made provision to lock / fix the component.
